A SORT OF FICTION

A multimedia exploration of temporal space and technology.

STEP 1: COLLECT RESOURCES

BUILDING A SCENE

One technique I use is to take several large format digital shots of a scene a patch them together in Photoshop.

FIND AUXILIARY IMAGERY

I'll then scour through my existing catalog to find images that will tell an interesting visual story.

2: PUT IT ALL TOGETHER

Using Photoshop, I put the collage together and prepare to print.

OTHER EXAMPLES

These are some of the other collages I have created. They all tell a story that's not quite fiction, but it's not quite real. I take a lot inspiration from Korean films of Chan-wook Park, like "Lady Vengeance" where reality and dreams intermingle seamlessly. I love how Black Mirror and Philip K. Dick are able to demonstrate the perils of human achievement. I also relate to the plays of Tom Stoppard like "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead," which break the fourth wall and tell the story behind another story. It’s all very meta.

3: HANG THE WORK

After printing the work on a large format printer, I'll install it. The space dictates the format and helps add to the immersive quality of the artwork.

WHAT'S NEXT?

This is where the Residency will help me develop as an artist in the emerging field of multimedia and digital arts.

4: MOTION

I’ve been shooting video my whole life. I use Premiere and After Effects to edit the work, but I’ve never been able to find a way to merge it into any cohesive vision with my printed work.

5: THE FUTURE

Now I want to take all these elements and develop an AR app that displays the motion and 3D animation in conjunction with the printed pieces. With this combined technology I can transform the spaces into fictional realities that engage the audience in ways that have never been possible. The residency will give me the time to develop the new work and learn the skills. I'm just beginning to understand the capabilities of the emerging technologies and how that can inform my work. In addition, I'll also need to find the right spaces to show the work. This takes time and the backing of a world-class organization that supports my vision will open doors to unexpected venues.
